Antique Russian Icon Holy Virgin Joy of All Who Sorrow w/Saints c.1700s
    Description:
Antique Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Holy Virgin made in mid-1700s.
This is a very special subject in Russian iconography, specific to Eastern Orthodox Church. There are many variations of Holy Virgin iconography with different names and themes. The inscription on top reads "Образъ Всехъ Скорбящихъ Радость Пресвятой Богородицы" in Russian or "Image of Joy of All Who Sorrow of Holy Mother of Jesus".
The iconography of this icon was established in late 1600s. Since the image of "Joy of All Who Sorrow" was made by more ors the same rules - at the top is Lord Jehovah with Sun and Moon on the sides and angels slightly below. The Holy Virgin is standing ion the center of the icon with Baby Jesus in Her left hand. on the sides are numerous Saints and People who suffer getting relief from Holy Virgin.
    Painted with egg tempera
on wooden board with the hollowed-out middle part (kovcheg). Fantastic detailed painting in the very traditional Russian iconography.
The icon is painted on a slightly hollowed out part of the board, making the sides and upper and bottom parts like a frame. This hollowed-out board is called "kovcheg" in Russian icongraphy. The figures on the sides are called "Forthcoming" and represent Archangels guarding the Virgin. There are slots in the back for the so-called "back slats" that were supposed to hold the icon from deforming when drying out. The slats themselves are not present.
Judging by manner of painting and the presence of the "kovcheg" and the back slats I date the icon to the mid-1700s
The icon measures 14" by 12". It is in good condition - there is some gold wear, very minor paint losses, but no losses to the board
Please note - this is an original icon from over 250 years old. Not a fake or copy.
